Smith has been at it since 1975, when, as a freshman at South Georgia's Valdosta State College, he gave his first electronic music recital. (The fifteen-minute "Signe Fingua," which leaned quite heavily on the droning period sonorities of Outside the Dream Syndicate. O, the pain...)

He's been in a few bands.
